Neuroscientists turned startup founders

Today the accelerator is home to young entrepreneurs who develop world-changing concepts in industries like Advanced IT, Medical & Health Technology, Chemical & Advanced Materials and Sustainable Technology.

Most of the ACE Venture Lab startup founders were only recently pursuing their academic careers. The founders of Metrica Sports - two PhD candidates in neuroscience – managed to combine two passions – science and football. The researchers joined ACE Venture Lab and founded a startup that provides data and video analysis tools for football teams. Metrica Sports has been working with FC VillaReal for a second season and keeps expanding its team and club portfolio.

Another academic duo of PhDs in computer science founded 904Labs – a startup that helps companies boost visitor engagement through self-learning search and better recommendation. In only nineteen months its team has engaged in projects and pilots with companies like Elsevier, Europeana, BVA Auctions and TeliaSonera.

Brightest technical minds at Amsterdam Science Park

The variety and novelty of concepts which the startups develop at ACE Venture Lab spans a wide range: from building personalised interactive walls that recognise people’s behaviour (Illi Engineering) to developing tools for real-time sports predictions (Instamrkt). The accelerator offers business support at any stage, allowing the startups to grow and work together in the community of in-house startups at Amsterdam Science Park. As Medicine Men develops smart medical applications for wearable devices, just around the corner the team of IDI Snowmobile works on socially responsible solutions for small drones.

Scaling up locally and internationally

ACE Venture Lab’s startups are not only growing in the Netherlands , but are also expanding overseas or cooperate with well-known international companies.

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) spin-off Scyfer helps companies maximise value of big data with machine predictive analytics techniques. After analysing big data for regional companies such as ING, ANWB, Northern Gas Networks, NOS and Sound Intelligence, Scyfer has recently started a collaboration with a multinational steel-making company Tata Steel. Another ACE Venture Lab’s in-house startup - CTcue - works on matching patient data with clinical trial criteria, allowing doctors and hospitals to quickly find suitable patients. Sponsored by five pharmaceutical companies, CTcue now works with five hospitals in the Netherlands and is setting up a branch in the United Kingdom.

Alumni network

With more and more startups scaling up, ACE Venture Lab’s alumni network grows each year. One of accelerator’s most successful alumnus - Lumicks – is building a revolutionary device that helps biologists see the molecular interactions at a single molecule level. With this technology promising to shed light on cancer and Alzheimer's, the major scientific institutions showed their interest to acquire the innovative device.

The road from academia to entrepreneurship

Twice a year ACE Venture Lab selects the ten most promising startups for an intensive and long term business support program. Only last year the accelerator received over one hundred applications from ambitious MSc students, researchers, senior scientists and technology experts who wanted to commercialise their innovations. Upon joining the accelerator each startup receives supervision that is tailored to their needs and gets an access to professional services and a network of experienced mentors. Most fascinating perhaps, is how the startups grow to be a vibrant entrepreneurial community and learn from each other how to build a high growth company.
