The Netherlands is the fifth-best country in the world as a location for IT companies, according to new research from the Economist Intelligence Unit and quoted by the Telegraaf newspaper.
IT infrastructure and research and development opportunities are particularly strong in the Netherlands, which rose from tenth place from last year’s survey. The country improved in the rankings due to better estimates on the number of IT patents registered.
The top four countries according to the report are the United States, Finland, Sweden and Canada.
Internet connections in the Netherlands are also the fourth-fastest in the world, according to US research quoted by news agency ANP.
The average Dutch download speed is 11 megabits. Top of the list is South Korea with 20.4 megabits, followed by Japan and Sweden. The US is in 28th place, with an average download speed of just 5.1 megabits.
30 of the 105 new international firms moving to the Amsterdam Area in 2008 were in the IT & communications (ICT) sector. Besides the solid digital infrastructure, the Area’s attractions include the largest data hub in the world, world class research institutes and innovative companies making use of them, and a large pool of talented professionals.
