LinkedIn is to open an office in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, the first time the California-based social media company has opened a local office.
LinkedIn is oriented primarily towards business users – 46 million worldwide - who can build their contacts network, place a CV and exchange messages with other members.
The site has 1.4 million users in the Netherlands, more than Myspace and Facebook and second only to Hyves. According to the company, 35% of the Dutch professional population has a LinkedIn profile, the highest density in any country.
The yet-to-be-determined office will initially have five employees, working on commercial partnerships, increasing membership and selling online ads in the Dutch market. It will also form a test bed for future localised offices.
In the same week, Linden Lab, makers of the online virtual world Second Life, also announced it is opening its first office outside of the US in Amsterdam.
