PICNIC Salon New York is a gathering of world-class creatives, brand innovators, thought-leaders and city officials from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and New York held on 29 June, 2009.
New York got a one-day taste of Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s 4th annual PICNIC event at the New Museum on Monday 29 June. This high-level networking event was a unique opportunity to reinforce cross-cultural relationships, make new contacts and further creative and commercial collaboration between the two cities.
With the support of the Mayor of Amsterdam and several partner organisations, the salon was intended as a taste of September’s three-day Picnic 09 programme, the Amsterdam Area’s annual get-together of cross media professionals, and the biggest event of its kind in Europe.
The one-day event was associated with NY 400, a series of special events and activities celebrating the enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States.
The salon included a special presentation from the Green Challenge, as well as a Creative Workshop & Brainstorm session with leading innovators from Amsterdam and New York.
The main programme took place at the New Museum, a striking modern addition to Manhattan's Bowery neighbourhood built as a home for contemporary art and an incubator for new ideas.
In the morning, Amsterdam’s Waag Society hosted a parallel (closed) creative workshop and brainstorm on the role of design and creative technologies in the future of our cities. Augmented, ubiquitous, real-time, broadband and smart technologies have a role in shaping the lives of many. What future will this lead to and how can we put these technologies to work for us?
The general sessions began with a look at how to bridge the gap between historical and digital collaboration, wih the keynote by author and Director of Amsterdam’s John Adams Institute, Russell Shorto. Amsterdam alderperson Carolien Gehrels outlined why the city is Europe’s Creative Capital.
Kevin Slavin, CEO of Area/Code on and Vurb's Ben Cerveny looked at the importance of play in creating participatory and connected cities.
The moving toward sustainable design and economy panel included Renny Ramakers of Droog Design. The event was rounded off with a talk on the creative process at Pixar by head of the animation studio's Moving Picture group, Michael B. Johnson.
