The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s sustainability credentials and air transport expertise were recognised at the 19th annual congress of ACI Europe in Manchester in July, when Amsterdam Airport Schiphol received the ACI Europe Best Airport Award.
The jury of ACI Europe (the European trade association for 440 airports in 45 countries) awarded the prize in recognition of the way in which the airport maintains its relationship with the local community as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy.
Special mention was made of the Alders Platform covenant and the launch of a sound barrier project to reduce noise pollution near Hoofddorp.
Schiphol participates in the ACI’s new Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, a designed to offer insight into the performance of individual airports’ CO2 emission reductions.
The airport has been working to reduce its emissions for several years and has the ambition to become fully CO2-neutral by 2012.
Just as in 2008, Schiphol has also been voted Best International Airport by the readers of the US Executive Travel Magazine. Schiphol was rated the number one airport in the world for leadership, customer focus and vision.
At the end of June, Canadian travel agents declared Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as their favourite International Airport in 2009. Also this year, it was voted best airport and best cargo terminal in Europe by Asian freight transport customers.
