Hotels: A pilar of Amsterdam's economy

Amsterdam is one of the world's most popular destinations for business and leisure, and the buoyant hotel market reflects this.

Hotels heat up

Visitor numbers and overnight stays are both predicted to continue growing in the future. That means a steady increase in demand for a range of hotel options. Hotels are part of the lucrative tourism and congresses sector, which is a significant part of the Amsterdam economy. The annual turnover of the sector is currently EUR 4.5 million.

Staying power

Reflecting its wide variety of visitors, Amsterdam has an impressive range of hotels, from world-class five-star establishments to floating ‘boatels.’ In the luxury category, for example, there’s the grand and beautifully refurbished Amstel Hotel. Or visitors can enjoy the Asian ambience of the Okura, with its two Michelin-starred restaurants.

Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam

Boutique hotels also flourish in Amsterdam’s idiosyncratic climate. Take stylishly funky Hotel V, or the exclusive Marcel Wanders-designed Lute Suites. Then there’s The Dylan with its cosmopolitan chic.

The city also has its share of innovative hotel concepts, including the one to five-star Lloyd Hotel and the new CitizenM chain, voted the world's trendiest hotel by travel site TripAdvisor.com. It is joined by other value-for-money brands like Yotel and Qbic. Plus, there are modern low-budget options, such as new-concept hostels like Stayokay.

All of this goes to show that a variety of hotel styles and business models can succeed in Amsterdam. Moreover, because of growth in demand, the city is open to new hotel initiatives across the entire spectrum. That includes everything from luxury five-star developments to fresh cost-conscious approaches.

Meeting a growing demand

Hotel Arena Amsterdam

Demand for hotel rooms in Amsterdam is expected to increase by 4% per year for the foreseeable future. The city is rising to this challenge by planning for an additional 9,000 new hotel rooms, to be realised before 2015.

The new rooms will be available in all categories, from one to five stars. For the region as a whole, 13,000 new rooms are needed. By the end of 2008, the city will have added 50 new addresses to its list of suitable hotel locations.

Business opportunities

Amsterdam welcomes new hotel initiatives of every kind. We’d like to hear your ideas. In return, our new Hotel Development Intermediary can tell you about the latest opportunities and possibilities in the city’s flourishing hospitality sector.
