Number one in English proficiency
The EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) is the world’s largest ranking of countries by English skills, surveying 72 countries and territories. The Netherlands is the top scorer of all countries, with a proficiency rating of ‘very high’ and an EPI score of 72.16. The index is released annually and is based on test data from more than 950,000 adults who have taken online English tests. The sixth edition evaluates tests taken in 2015.
The Netherlands is generally renowned for its multilingual population. The vast majority of Amsterdam’s residents speak English well and are often fluent in one or two languages on top of that. In addition to the high EPI scores, the Netherlands also regularly scores highly in the EF English Proficiency for Companies survey, which evaluates English skills among the global workforce. In 2016, the country came first in those rankings, too. The multilingual, cosmopolitan talent pool is one of the factors that makes Amsterdam so attractive to international businesses.
