An innovative publishing accelerator in Amsterdam

The Renew the Book competition is an intense booktech accelerator that pits four startups against one another. This year's participating startups are StoryTourist (Sweden), WriteReader (Denmark), Writing for TiNY (Ireland) and Zola Books (United States). The startups are challenging themselves and their business plans in an intensive 40-day programme led by Rockstart.

Following last year’s success, GAU have been inviting startups from all over the world to bring innovation and new business models to the Dutch publishing industry. Renew the Book is currently the leading startup competition in the industry, and Wiet de Bruijn – chairman of the General Publishers Association – is delighted with the programme's success. “We have received 53 applications this year from 25 countries. The level of quality of the startups is really high, and the ideas came from over the whole world,” he says. “Together with Rockstart we have selected the startups, based on the strength of their proposition, their stage of development and their proven results. We are proud for these finalists and for the reach of our programme.”

The participating startups

StoryTourist (Sweden) is a new way to travel and experience books at the very location where the action takes place, using audio and augmented reality.

WriteReader (Denmark) enables young children to become authors and publish their own digital books – all while learning to read and write.

Writing for TiNY (Ireland) is an award-winning children’s book startup that utilises innovative, bespoke software for highly personalised books about changes, worries and milestones.

Zola Books (United States) offers a set of proprietary tech products that enable anyone to easily sell any book in any format on their site.

Programme and prize

The programme consists of expert talks, workshops with mentors and sessions with high-profile sponsors from the publishing industry. The intensive accelerator will facilitate the further development of the businesses. The winner will be selected during the finale on 30 March 2017 and will receive a  €15,000 prize.
