A new icon for the Zuidas

Construction of the now Amsterdam RAI hotel officially began (Dutch link) on 26 October. This iconic hotel will change the Amsterdam skyline when it opens in mid-2019.

With 650 rooms and at a height of 91 metres, it will be the largest hotel in the Benelux. The complex will form a central hub where RAI exhibition visitors, business travellers, tourists, and locals can gather in the Amsterdam Zuidas district. The arrival of the hotel will also strengthen the RAI’s competitive position, which will increase its value to the city of Amsterdam.

OMA, the architectural firm established by Rem Koolhaas, created a design that blends seamlessly into the current RAI complex while also offering a modern character. The hotel’s construction can also be followed online.

On the horizon: the Hourglass and Two Amsterdam

Another major change in the Zuidas district is the redesign of its Twin Towers buildings. Construction on the refurbished towers, which will be re-branded as Two Amsterdam, will start in 2017, and the buildings are due to open in 2018.

Likewise, another new development known as the Hourglass is also underway. This hourglass-shaped building will be delivered in late 2019. The new complex will combine offices, retail, restaurants, parking spaces, and a hotel.

Steady growth

The Zuidas district, in the south of Amsterdam, already offers bountiful space for living, working, studying, and relaxing. It is best known as an international business centre, and is home to more than 700 companies such as Google, AkzoNobel and ABN AMRO.

The
Zuidas Amsterdam Development Office is working to create a high-quality living and working environment that is dynamic, safe, accessible, and sustainable. The arrival of more and more residents in recent years has seen Zuidas transform into a well-rounded neighbourhood with amenities including (international) schools, cafés, restaurants, sports centres, and shops.
