Amsterdam: leading digital city

One of those rankings is the newly launched European Digital City Index (EDCi), which describes how well different European cities support digital entrepreneurship. Amsterdam came in 3rd place overall out of 60 European cities, ranking in the top three for both startups and scale-ups. The index provides information about the strengths and weaknesses of local ecosystems, allowing companies and cities to plan accordingly and consider where to devote resources.

As the report explains, Amsterdam is considered an exciting and diverse city, and this adds to its allure as one of the best places in Europe to start a business. It also scored strongly in terms of capital, culture and connectedness. Likewise, Amsterdam's size permits a great degree of experimentation in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Inspiring city

The Amsterdam-based online travel platform Travel Bird has also published a new ranking of the world's most inspiring cities. Amsterdam came in at 20th place out of the 85 global cities surveyed. The index was based on eight criteria associated with creativity, romance, culture and innovation. Examples are the number of art academies, galleries, and museums in each city, as well as how many facilities for music and film production the city has to offer.

A prosperous land across the board

In terms of prosperity, the Netherlands also scores very well, coming in at second place in both education and economic quality in the latest Global Prosperity Index. This index, published by the Legatum Institute, ranks the most prosperous 149 countries in the world, and the most recent edition was published (PDF) on 3 November 2016.

The Legatum Institute considers more than just money in its ranking. It compares 104 variables in categories such as economic quality, business environment, governance, education, health, and the natural environment. Examples include traditional factors such as the number of people in full-time work, but also how many secure internet servers a country has, and how well-rested its people feel on a day-to-day basis.
