Amsterdam a launchpad for international expansion

A new article by Bloomberg profiles Amsterdam as a city that is becoming a major location for technology companies. The article coincides with the Tech Fest Europe and the TNW Conference, both of which are happening in Amsterdam during this highly eventful week.
 
The city is now a popular site for companies large and small to launch into the wider European market. Amsterdam’s famously international attitude makes it a perfect location to experiment with new ideas. Its central location and unmatched transport connections make it ideal for expansion, and the city also enjoys an extremely high standard of living.

In 2015, the Digital City ranked Amsterdam as the region’s second-best city for tech startups. And according to Kajsa Ollongren, Amsterdam’s deputy mayor in charge of economic affairs, “The more we position Amsterdam as a gateway to Europe, the more companies come here”. Some 140 foreign companies opened offices in Amsterdam in 2015, and they are expected to account for about 3,000 new jobs.
 
Tech companies that have already established European headquarters in Amsterdam include Netflix, Uber, and Tesla. Locally grown companies making waves include the payment processor Adyen and food-delivery giant Takeaway.com.

The city helps companies to grow

To help attract even more new businesses, the city recently created StartupAmsterdam, an organisation that helps entrepreneurs find their way in the city. The Dutch government has also reserved funds to give extra support to the most promising startups, those that are most likely to create jobs.

Interviewees mention a wide range of reasons for choosing Amsterdam. These include how easy it is to build up a network in this city, and how its village-like feel make it very appealing to employees. Others point to how Amsterdam’s role as the ideal launchpad for companies that are looking to expand globally.
