Pro-business operating environment

In the overall ranking of its Europe 2020 Competitiveness Report 2014, the Netherlands comes third, with only Finland and Sweden surpassing the Dutch. The Europe 2020 Competitiveness Report assesses various European countries based on seven pillars, namely enterprise environment; digital agenda; innovation; education and training; labour market and employment; social inclusion and environmental stability. In the report, the World Economic Forum praises the Dutch for building an inclusive society while maintaining one of the most pro-business operating environments in Europe. The report stressed outstanding ICT services and use as well as an excellent educational system.

Hub for tech and talent

These results are supported by previous research. According to a recent global education league table compiled by education and publishing specialists Pearson, the Netherlands’ education system presently ranks eighth in the world. Research by Akamai reaffirmed this spring that the Netherlands is home to one of the fastest internet connections in the world and, according to the latest Akamai report, high broadband adoption (with a speed of more than 10 Mbps) is at 45% in the Netherlands – a much higher percentage than in many other European countries. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area also boasts the best possible digital foundation thanks to the presence of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, which is the largest data transport hub in the world.
