Bringing innovative businesses together

Blippar announced the news in a press release, stating: “By bringing the two businesses together, we look forward to harnessing Layar’s technical insight and practical know-how and combining it with our own to effectively ‘own’ the AR and visual browsing space and sow the seeds for mass consumer adoption.” According to web magazine TechCrunch, the acquisition of Layar makes Blippar one of the largest players in augmented reality in the world.

Vibrant start-up hub

Founded in 2009, Layar is one of the many innovative tech start-ups with roots in Amsterdam. The acquisition illustrates Amsterdam’s reputation as one of the hottest IT start-up capitals. The city has regularly received international praise, for example from Wired magazine and industry experts such as Twitter founder Dom Sagolla. It is also home to The Next Web, one of the world’s leading online publications about internet technology, business and culture.
