Amsterdam’s growing tech ecosystem needs more talent

On 20 November, representatives from the City of Amsterdam as well as many of the region’s leading tech employers will be heading to the European Digital Jobs Fair in Madrid, in search of highly-skilled employees.

Dutch technology companies are looking to tap into Spain’s rich digital talent base at a time when young, well-trained Spaniards are struggling to find jobs locally. Companies from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area that will be representing Amsterdam’s tech scene at the fair include TomTom, Booking.com, Catawiki, Leaseweb, MobGen, and Mobiquity. The organizers expect that the fair will attract about 400-500 job candidates, who will be able to set up interviews and access training programmes provided by the participating companies.

As Andrus Ansip, Vice-President of the European Commission for the Digital Single Market, said, "Europe has many digital jobs that urgently need to be filled; matching them up with tech-savvy jobseekers will help to address the digital skills gap.”

A city that makes things easy for talented employees 

The City of Amsterdam will also be giving presentations that explain more about the unique opportunities available in the Amsterdam region, and will be highlighting the city’s own job-search site. This is especially helpful seeing as Amsterdam is one of Europe’s leading startup hubs, with several incubators and more than 800 startups.

StartupAmsterdam, the city’s action programme working to secure a position for Amsterdam in the top 3 of European startup hubs, emphasizes the importance of a startup talent pool.  They facilitate startup and coding academies to develop and grow startup specific skills, and connect talent to startups.” 

Because more than 30% of Amsterdam’s working population in the private sector is employed by foreign companies, Amsterdam actively tries to minimize the amount of red tape as much as possible. For example, the Expatcenter Amsterdam provides companies and international workers with a one-stop-shop for questions and services related to migration.
