Optimal environment for news providers

The top three countries in which freedom of the press is most respected is the same as last year, with Nordic countries demonstrating their ability to maintain an optimal environment for news providers. The Netherlands' high ranking on the Press Freedom Index reaffirms the liberal, tolerant and free-spirited image that is associated with the country, and Amsterdam in particular. In turn, this environment attracts many talented people from around the world to the Amsterdam Area.

Outstanding quality of life

The quality of life here is almost unrivalled. Amsterdam is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Apart from the native speakers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Amsterdam is considered to be one of the only cities in which you can work fully in English. In the 2012 Mercer Quality of Living index, Amsterdam ranked 12th, matching its position of 2011.

The liberal and tolerant culture doesn’t only translate into very good living conditions, it is good for business too. It is no coincidence that the Netherlands ranked 11th place on the 2013 GE Global Innovation Barometer and has the highest penetration of social media in the world according to research by comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world.
