Twitter in the Netherlands
Particularly the use of microblogging sites such as Twitter is high among Dutch companies, according to the latest numbers published by CBS (in Dutch). In 2013, 27% of all Dutch businesses used these services, compared to an average of just 10% in all EU countries. The fact that Dutch companies are important to Twitter is illustrated by the fact that the company decided to set up an office in Amsterdam in 2013. Twitter’s Amsterdam base is mainly used as a sales office. From here, advertising space is sold to various Dutch companies.
The fact that an increasing number of organisations in the Netherlands are using social media can be explained by the high penetration of social media here. According to CBS, seven out of ten Dutch citizens (aged 12 years and older) use social networks. The Netherlands also has an exceptionally high representation among the social networking sites Twitter and LinkedIn, ranking first in terms of internet penetration for these sites. Among young people in the Netherlands, the use of social media is even higher: 93% of 12- to 18-year-olds and 98% of 18- to 25-year-olds.
