Business and tech experts believe this Amsterdam-based media technology company has what it takes to be a game changer in the industry.

Reshaping advertising

BlueBubbleLab has engineered software that can ‘read people’s faces’ and thereby target advertising accordingly. The software captures a person’s mood and responses by looking at the movements of 128 muscles in their face. Combined with data about someone’s gender and age, this allows for the mass customisation of advertisements. According to the company’s website, customers can use the software on several devices, such as smartphones, webcams and digital cameras.

Paul Hiel, Business Development Director and Co-Founder at BlueBubbleLab, told Forbes: “Our software has 80-98% confidence rate. It is able to see things better than humans. It took us one and a half years to make the algorithms work on multiple operating systems and across a large variety of devices. People can use or solutions in apps, TVs, billboards, cameras, virtually anywhere.”

BlueBubbleLab is one of the many promising start-ups located at the Venture Lab in Science Park Amsterdam. The Venture Lab is a coaching and support progamme for start-ups from a scientific background. It is just one of the many ways in which Amsterdam facilitates the growth and commercialisation of great ideas from local talents.

Science Park Amsterdam

Science Park Amsterdam is a knowledge hub in Amsterdam and a very popular location for start-ups to set up, meet new peers and find collaborators. Recently, Science Park Amsterdam expanded with the opening of Matrix VI, a new business complex intended primarily for companies in the Life Sciences sector. In March 2013, the first businesses moved into the newly developed building, which provides both modern office spaces and laboratories.

Vibrant start-up hub

Amsterdam has been praised by many influential people as a vibrant start-up hub. According to serial entrepreneur and Silicon Valley veteran Dan Harple, for example, Amsterdam is a hotspot for internet start-ups. He describes the start-up scene in Amsterdam as “cutting edge” and “state of the art”, even going so far as to say that in comparison with Berlin and London, Amsterdam “rocks”.
