Both The Drum and Business Insider recently published in-depth articles about the success of agencies based in the area.

Acknowledging creative success in Amsterdam

In its August 2013 edition, The Drum published a 48-page supplement about Amsterdam. Within it, the magazine digs deeper into the reasons why Amsterdam is such a creative hotspot, attracting top talent and world-renowned creative agencies.

The Drum interviewed people from some of the biggest advertising agencies that have established in Amsterdam, such as Clay Mills of Wieden+Kennedy. Having set up their Amsterdam base in 1992, their office here has enjoyed considerable success ever since. For example, at the 2013 Cannes Lions awards, this Amsterdam-based agency took the Grand Prix (in the category Creative Effectiveness) for ‘Heineken’s Legendary Journey: Justifying a Premium the World Over’.

A cosmopolitan village

Mills adds in The Drum: “Amsterdam agencies seem less inclined towards obsession at what the industry competition is up to, which can lead to work unencumbered by category conventions or the latest fashionable rhetoric. I think Amsterdam agencies enjoy a sort of benevolent naïveté in this respect.” All interviewed agencies also stressed that the fact that the city is a true cosmopolitan village, attracting creative talent from all over the world, definitely plays a role in the success of the sector.

Cultural diversity

In its article, Business Insider sat down with Victor Knaap (one of the founders of MediaMonks) and Tribal DDB. The latter collected three Cannes Lions Awards this year. In this interview, Tribal DDB’s head of strategy, Antoinette Hoes, explains that the Dutch industry is great at “incorporating different cultures, nationalities and disciplines” into its work.

The celebrated start-up scene in Amsterdam

Marjolein Koppelaar, the managing director of Ve Interactive’s recently established Benelux office in Amsterdam adds in the Business Insider article: “Amsterdam is a hub within Europe and the tech and start-up scene is growing very fast. Around the Canal Ring there is a real growth of these kind of companies. It’s great to have like-minded companies around you and it is definitely exciting to be part of the fast-growing community.”
