Additional tax incentives for established businesses

An amendment to the MIA\Vamil Environment List means that businesses that invest in environmentally friendly equipment are eligible for additional tax deductions as of 1 January 2011.

Promoting sustainability

Environmentally friendly equipment can mean tax breaks for businesses

The Environment List lists environmentally friendly equipment which qualifies for the so-called ‘environment investment deduction’ (MIA) or the ‘arbitrary debit of environmental investments’ (Vamil).

These are fiscal incentive systems offered by the Ministries of Infrastructure, Environment and Finance. The objective is to encourage Dutch companies to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

MIA

MIA’s goal is to encourage entrepreneurs to invest in environmentally friendly equipment. Up to 36% of annual investment costs are deductible from the profit over the calendar year in which the equipment is procured. The deduction percentage is dependent in part on the environmental impact of the equipment which is listed on the Environment List (Milieulijst).

Vamil

Vamil’s goal is to encourage entrepreneurs to introduce environmentally friendly equipment into the current market. The Vamil regulation offers entrepreneurs a liquidity and interest advantage. Machinery that is listed on the combined MIA\Vamil list can be depreciated more quickly. The investing company can write off the investment at an earlier stage, which results in the reduction of operating profit and tax payments. The Environment List (Milieulijst) lists which equipment qualifies for Vamil.

For more information or questions about the MIA and Vamil subsidies, consult the SenterNovem website.

Attractive taxation system

Both schemes, which are part of the Dutch tax system, are very attractive incentives for entrepreneurs. The taxation climate attracts foreign companies to the Netherlands.
