A subsidy scheme that was instigated by the City of Amsterdam to encourage businesses to switch to more sustainable methods of transportation has proven very successful. The maximum number of applicants has recently been reached and therefore applications for the subsidy have been frozen.
The subsidy scheme was initiated to reimburse businesses in Amsterdam for up to 50% of the additional cost of purchasing an electric vehicle, demonstrating that the city is serious about sustainability.
The City of Amsterdam set aside a budget of 3 million euros for the subsidy. These funds have since aided local businesses to purchase 260 new electric vehicles, setting a clear marker that the city is intent on becoming a green transportation hub.
To stimulate electric transportation further, recharging stations are being installed all over the Netherlands. At these public charging points, anybody with an electric vehicle can park and charge for free. Naturally, electricity from renewable sources (such as wind power) will be used at these charging points.
