Essent NV, a unit of the second largest German utility company RWE AG (RWE), won a contract to supply and install 125 electric vehicle charging points in Amsterdam. The first charging points are due to be installed by June 2011.
The City of Amsterdam has ambitious environmental targets and plans for 10,000 electric vehicles in the city by 2015. There are already about 100 publicly accessible charging points, making Amsterdam one of Europe’s trendsetters in the introduction of electric mobility.
More and cheaper electric vehicles will be available in Amsterdam soon. Several car manufacturers will sell 100 percent, zero emission electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn and Opel Ampera, to the public shortly.
Amsterdam is serious about sustainability and is collaborating with Renault and Nissan to introduce more electric vehicles to the capital.
To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the City of Amsterdam plans to increase the number of recharging points for electric cars from the current 100 to almost 2,000.
City planners hope that electric car use will increase if stations are conveniently located. 150 electric cars currently use the 100 existing points. In 2009, Amsterdam set the goal of having 5 percent of all vehicles in the city running on electricity by 2015.
