Avantium and Coca-Cola announce partnership

Coca-Cola has selected the Amsterdam-based company Avantium for the production of its environmentally-friendly next-generation bottles. Both businesses made an announcement on 15 December 2011, declaring their intentions to develop and produce a more sustainable type of PEF container.

Avantium is a research and technology company that has developed a way to produce bio-based PEF bottles. These bottles are a sustainable alternative to traditional oil-based PET bottles. In its statement, Avantium says it plans to initiate commercial production of its PEF bottle at a new plant within three to four years.

In their own announcement Coca-Cola adds: “This is a significant R&D investment in packaging innovation and is the next step toward our vision of creating all of our plastic packaging from responsibly sourced plant-based materials."
