The European Green City Index says Amsterdam is the fifth ‘greenest’ city in Europe.
The European Green City Index measures and rates the environmental performance of 30 leading cities from 30 European countries, as well as their commitment to reducing their environmental impact. Copenhagen is the ‘greenest’ major city in Europe, followed by Stockholm, Oslo, Vienna, and the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
According to the index, the Amsterdam Area appears to be a lot ‘greener’ than two of the other major international business hubs in Europe: Paris and London (number 11 and 12 in the list).
The study evaluates the 30 cities in eight categories: CO2 emissions; energy; buildings; transportation; water; air quality; waste and land use; and environmental governance. Amsterdam is number one in the category water and the category waste and land use. According to the study, it also has the second ‘greenest’ public transportation.
The Economist Intelligence Unit has conducted the study, sponsored by Siemens. The results were presented in Copenhagen on 8 December, 2009.
