The Netherlands #1 in broadband connection

The 2009 yearly report of the Independent Post and Telecommunication Authority (OPTA) listed the Netherlands in first place in the world for the number of broadband internet connections.

The Netherlands takes the lead

The Netherlands established its sixth millionth broadband connection in 2009, taking the lead over Denmark for broadband penetration. Active encouragement by the government has resulted in 38.1 broadband connections per 100 residents in the Netherlands. The OECD average for countries with broadband is 22.8 connections per 100 residents.

Amsterdam Internet Exchange

ICT - Amsterdam number one

Initiatives within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area will insure that the Netherlands remains in the lead for years to come. By 2015, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area will connect every business and household to a high-speed fibre optic network. Amsterdam boasts the best possible digital foundation in the form of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX).

This powerful and stable global internet hub supports the rise of a dynamic digital sector which includes internet service providers, mobile operators, web hosts, content and VoIP providers, and applications specialists.

Digital dominance

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s advanced and rapidly developing digital infrastructure is a unique opportunity to test new services and products and attracts businesses active in the ICT sector. In 2009, 25% of all new international companies that moved to the Amsterdam Area were active in the ICT sector.

Dominance of mobile telophony systems

Another trend that emerged from the Market Monitor report was the dominance of mobile telephony, with 28% of the Dutch population owning a second mobile phone. The report concluded that this was partially due to low subscriber and calling fees. The average caller in the Netherlands pays the lowest fees according to the OECD report.

Market Moniter 2009

The Market Monitor 2009 is based in part on external public sources and public information from OPTA’s Structural Monitoring Markets.
