The Schiphol Group has become sole owner of JFK IAT, for the management and operations of Terminal 4 at New York's JFK airport. Schiphol made this announcement at a press conference in New York on 11 August 2010.
Schiphol Group is an independent and commercial enterprise that operates Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Schiphol USA, a subsidiary of the Schiphol Group, has held 40% of the shares in JFK IAT since 1997. A development company by the name of LCOR owns another 40% and Lehman Brothers the remaining 20% of shares.
At that time, JFK IAT negotiated a lease with the owner of the airport infrastructure for a period of twenty years. The agreement has now been extended until 2043.
Schiphol Group was interested in playing a more important role in JFK; this fits in seamlessly with existing activities in Amsterdam and with the important role the aviation enterprise already has in Paris airports. SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, partnering 11 Members and 3 Associate carriers, which includes Air France, KLM and U.S. Delta airlines, has chosen several airports as major hubs.
In addition to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Paris, JFK Airport has been selected as a major hub. The move is expected to increase traffic between nodes, which will further benefit the Schiphol Group and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
The commercial enterprise, Schiphol Group, is a pioneer in the aviation world. Two years ago, they signed the very first airport alliance with Aéroports de Paris. Today they are operating the first airport terminal in the United States.
