On 10 May 2010, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol launched theGROUNDS, a knowledge centre to facilitate institutions to develop innovative applications for sustainable aviation.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has partnered up with several companies and knowledge institutes to jointly develop innovative applications for sustainable aviation. theGROUNDS is a collaboration of Schiphol, technical service provider Imtech and knowledge institutes: the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), Technical University (TU) Delft and Wageningen University & Research Centre (UR).
As one of the largest European airports, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is an important contributor to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and the ideal business gateway to Europe. Amsterdam's prime location at the heart of Europe’s main consumer market, excellent airport facilities and advanced infrastructure make for the perfect platform for businesses to serve their European customers. Due to the ongoing effort the region puts into environmental-friendly modes of transport, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area proves to be the undisputed choice for a greener supply chain.
“With theGROUNDS we aim to live up to our ambition to be the most sustainable and innovative airport. This initiative will boost our ambition. I am confident that theGROUNDS will catalyze the development of new products and innovations”, says Jos Nijhuis, President & CEO of Schiphol Group. theGROUNDS works at developing concrete solutions for energy, water management and mobility. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has developed a 3D interactive map with an overview of all sustainable activities that the Schiphol Group is currently involved in.
Schiphol's ambition is to become carbon-neutral by 2012 and generate 20% of all its energy requirements sustainably by 2020. This will be realised by, amongst others, the Imtech Trias Energetica approach, whereby a sustainable energy supply is achieved via three simultaneous steps, namely energy saving, sustainable energy generation, and energy efficiency. This approach is a proven business case for Imtec and is being used with success in other projects.
