During 2011, the number of passengers that travelled through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol grew by more than 10%, reaching a record number of almost 50 million. Mr Jos Nijhuis, the president and CEO of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, announced the good news at the airport’s New Year reception.
The positive news about Schiphol’s successful year was covered by several Dutch media outlets, such as national broadcaster NOS (in Dutch). The growth in passenger numbers has led to an increased market share for the airport. Schiphol is now Europe’s fourth-largest passenger airport. It is in close proximity to the Port of Amsterdam and the Port of Rotterdam, and is further supported by a wide rail and road transport network. For passengers, as well as cargo, all the main European markets are easily accessible, meaning the airport is a true European gateway.
One of the primary reasons why more passengers chose Schiphol during 2011 has been the expansion of its airport services. With the addition of new flight destinations, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol now directly serves more than 300 European and intercontinental destinations.
