In spite of the challenging economic conditions in Europe, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol continues to expand its services. With the addition of new flight destinations, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol now directly serves over 300 European and intercontinental destinations.
As of 30 October 2011, two new airlines fly to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: Air Europa, with two flights to Madrid daily, and Skywork, with a flight to Bern daily.
Bern is one of 12 new destinations that are now being served directly from Schiphol. Other new destinations include Buenos Aires, Luanda and Puerto Vallarta.
Consequently, as the number of destinations increases, so does the number of passengers choosing Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. On 19 October, Schiphol was pleased to welcome its one billionth passenger. The passenger arrived onboard KLM flight KL0644 from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The passenger was greeted at the gate by Mr Jos Nijhuis, President and CEO of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Mr Peter Hartman, President and CEO of KLM.
Mr Nijhuis commented in a press release: “Since the foundation of the airport in 1916, we have built up a network of connections that links the Netherlands to the rest of the world via 303 destinations in more than 100 countries. Schiphol has grown into an airport that is vital to the Dutch economy and an important driving force for job creation in the region. Today we have reached the milestone of one billion passengers and we are celebrating this with passengers, airlines, ground handlers and staff."
