Ben Scholten, Economics Councillor for Almere, received a virtual roadmap for Desktop Grids from Almere-based Genias Benelux on 11 February 2011. The company is a partner in the European Contrail Project.
The goal of the Contrail Project is to find a solution for providers of cloud services so that they can share resources with each other. The project is financially supported by the European Commission. More information is available on the Contrail Project website. The roadmap describes how home and office desktop computers can participate in a meaningful way and become part of a grid or cloud.
Cloud computing makes hardware, software and data available to the end user on the internet. The user pays for access but does not have to own the hardware, software or data which ultimately saves them money.
Genias is a computer consultancy and software company from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (Almere) which specialises in grid and cloud computing. Genias also leads the AlmereGrid project which connects the computers of individuals and companies on the Almere Fiber Pilot to the central AlmereGrid Exchange, creating an extremely powerful supercomputer with enormous computing capacity. This is the only project of its kind anywhere in the world.
The Amsterdam Area is an ideal location for developing innovative cloud projects such as the AlmereGrid and the Contrail projects. The Netherlands has the highest broadband internet penetration in the world with 38.1 broadband connections per 100 inhabitants.
The largest data transport hub in the world, the AMS-IX, operates in the region. These factors have created a strong ICT sector in the Amsterdam Area. Of the Forbes 2000 companies active in ICT, 60% have offices in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
