Research conducted by Akamai shows that the Netherlands has the fastest internet connections in Europe. The national download speed average in the Netherlands is 7.5 Mbps (megabits per second). Only Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan surpass the Netherlands in terms of internet speed.
The research also shows that the Netherlands has 8.2 million unique Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. An IP address is a numerical label that is assigned to every computer that participates in a computer network that uses the internet for communication.
As a result of this numerical label you can tell the number of individual computers that are connected to the internet, and from a population of approximately 16 million people, 8.2 million unique IP addresses can be considered substantial.
The fact that the average internet speed is so high may be due to the high density of high speed internet connections in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The Amsterdam Area has one of the world’s highest broadband concentrations. It also boasts the best possible digital foundation, in the shape of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange AMS-IX. This is the largest data transport hub in the world.
Organisations active in the ICT industry are very much aware of this and many have chosen the Amsterdam Area as a location for their operations. Of the Forbes 2000 companies active in ICT, more than 50 % have an office in the Amsterdam Area.
