Dutch internet users have the highest internet utilisation rates in Europe. In March 2011, Dutch users spent on average 34.4 hours online. This is 33% more than the European average of 26 hours according to comScore, the global source of digital market intelligence.
Not only do the Dutch spend the most time online when compared to other European countries, they also visit a larger variety of websites. In March 2011, internet users in the Netherlands viewed on average 3,515 pages each, 31% greater than the European average.
Google ranked as the top European website in March, reaching 90.8% of the total European internet audience, with Microsoft sites second and Facebook in third place.
These results illustrate the variety and sophistication of internet usage in the Netherlands. Another comScore study showed the Netherlands as having the highest penetration of social media in the world.
Approximately 96% of the Dutch online population makes use of social media and they rank number one in usage on social networking sites Twitter and LinkedIn.
A possible explanation for the Dutch dominance on the web is the high density of broadband internet connections in the country. In 2010, the Netherlands remained the country with the highest density of broadband connections out of all OECD countries, according to the Independent Post and Telecommunications Authority (OPTA) in the Netherlands.
The advanced and rapidly developing digital infrastructure presents a unique opportunity for businesses to test new services and products.
