Research conducted by market research specialists TNS NIPO shows that 70% of the Dutch population uses the internet daily. Internet usage exceeds that of newspapers, television or radio.
Research conducted in 46 countries and involving more than 50,000 people showed that the way people use the internet is changing. Social networks are more popular and the web is used less for emailing.
In the Netherlands, there are a large number of households connected to the worldwide web. This explains in part why the Dutch are such heavy users of the internet.
According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), 90% of Dutch households were connected to the Internet in 2009. The EU average is 65%. The Netherlands is followed by Luxembourg (87%), Sweden (86%), and Germany (79%). Great Britain is in seventh place with 77% and France is in 13th position with 63%.
Initiatives within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area will assure the Netherlands’ leading position in the coming years. The Amsterdam Area has one of the world’s highest broadband concentrations which has given rise to a strong digital sector.
By 2015, the Amsterdam Area will see every business and household connected to a high-speed fibre optic network. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s advanced and rapidly developing digital infrastructure is a unique opportunity for businesses to test new services and products.
