Despite the international economic crisis, the data centre market in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is prospering. According to a recent report from real estate consultants CB Richard Ellis, the number of data centres in Amsterdam is soaring, outperforming many other European locations.
During the first three quarters of 2011, almost 10,000 m2 of data centre capacity was being utilised in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. This figure gives Amsterdam a European market share of 33%, meaning it is outperforming other key cities such as Frankfurt, London and Paris.
In CBRE's announcement, Amsterdam's success in the data centre sector is explained by the city's position as a connectivity hub. The Amsterdam Area is not only extremely well connected geographically but also digitally, thanks to innovative projects such as the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). This is one of the world's largest digital exchange platforms and is renowned for its reliability, quality and low costs.
Importantly for the data centre industry, the Amsterdam Area is populated by a healthy balance of telecommunications and technology companies. The advantageous tax climate and excellent digital infrastructure attracts major international ICT companies to the region, which is fast becoming the software and ICT capital of Europe. More than 50% of all Forbes Global 2000 companies active in the ICT sector have an office in the Amsterdam Area.
In 2012, the Amsterdam Area is likely to remain a popular destination to establish data centres. Interxion recently announced plans to establish a sixth data centre in Amsterdam. Equinix announced similar plans following the opening of their second data centre in Amsterdam earlier in 2011.
