Room for hotel growth in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the world's most popular destinations for both business and leisure. The hospitality industry reflects this. To share the latest developments and provide a platform for the hospitality industry to network, Amsterdam's Hotel Development Intermediary organised a network event on 21 May.

Hotels: a pillar of Amsterdam's economy

Plenty of room for growth in Amsterdam hotel industry

Alderperson of Economic Affairs of the City of Amsterdam, Carolien Gehrels gave a short speech about the importance of the hotel industry to the city.

She stressed that staying in a good hotel is an important part of the way visitors experience Amsterdam. The number of visitors and overnight stays are expected to rise, implying a rising demand for a wide range of hotel options.

Amsterdam's bouyant hotel market

Demand for hotel rooms in Amsterdam is expected to increase substantially per year in the foreseeable future. The City of Amsterdam is rising to the challenge by planning for thousands of new hotel rooms to be completed before 2015.

The new rooms will be available in all categories; from one to five stars. This year, some 1100 new hotel rooms are being developed, according to Alderperson Gehrels.

To give entrepreneurs an overview of current hotel development locations, the Hotel Development Intermediary has created an interactive map.

Trends in the industry

Trendwatcher Vincent van Dijk can be considered an expert on the current quality of hotels in Amsterdam. Every night this year, Van Dijk sleeps in another hotel in Amsterdam. He writes about this project on his website Amsterdam slaapt (in Dutch).

On the network event of the Amsterdam Hotel Intermediary, he shared some of his experiences so far. "Most of the hotels in Amsterdam are clustered together in the centre of the city, while there are plenty of potential hotspots to start a hotel a bit outside of the centre," he says.

Vincent van Dijk also pointed to the trend of brand hotels, such as the Armani Hotel in Dubai.

Business opportunities

Amsterdam welcomes new hotel initiatives of every kind. We'd like to hear your ideas. In return, our new Hotel Development Intermediary can tell you about the latest opportunities and possibilities in the city's flourishing hospitality sector.
