Amsterdam hotel industry growth

According to research (in Dutch) by the economic bureau of ING bank and in spite of the current euro crisis, the Dutch hotel industry is expected to grow in 2011 - particularly in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam attracts

Amsterdam hotel industry growing

Amsterdam’s main strength is its ability to attract a steady stream of tourists and business travellers alike. The beautiful historic city centre acts as a magnet for both national and international tourists who come to enjoy the vibrant nightlife, to take a canal tour or to pay a visit to one of the many impressive museums.

Business travellers enjoy their time in the city too, with 25% of the total number of ‘nights spent in the Netherlands’ (in 2010, by business travellers) taking place in Amsterdam.

Popular conference location

A report by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) reveals that Amsterdam is also a popular location to host a conference. The ICCA report ranked Amsterdam the 9th most popular city to host a conference in the world. In 2010, Amsterdam hosted 104 meetings that were organised by international associations.

Growth prospects

The market for hotels is booming across Amsterdam with the demand for hotel rooms expected to increase substantially into the foreseeable future. Amsterdam is rising to the challenge with thousands of new hotel rooms (ranging from one star to five) currently in the planning stages, are due to be complete by 2015.

Recent arrival

Several new hotels have opened their doors in Amsterdam recently. DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station (formerly the Mint Hotel) recently opened its doors, situated on the river front, near Central Station. In its previous incarnation, it was British hotel chain City Inn's first hotel on continental Europe. It cost more than 100 million euros to build and was the largest British investment in the city for five years.

Business opportunities

Amsterdam welcomes new hotel initiatives of every kind. Amsterdam’s Hotel Development intermediary would like to hear your ideas and in return can tell you about the latest opportunities and possibilities in the city's flourishing hospitality sector.
