Amsterdam's flourishing hospitality sector
A recent study by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants has revealed that Amsterdam is among Europe's top performers in terms of growth in the number of overnight stays in the last five years. The report also concludes that Amsterdam is one of the most attractive cities in Europe for tourists.
Amsterdam: top performer
With the highest amount of overnight stays per inhabitant and above average growth numbers, Amsterdam is categorised as an absolute top performer by Roland Berger. The European Capital City Tourism Report compared the tourist sector in 24 European cities, including London, Paris, Berlin and Rome.
London and Paris top the list in terms of revenue per available room (RevPAR), which means that they achieve the highest average hotel room price. Amsterdam ranks third in terms of RevPAR and since there is a clear correlation between room rates and occupancy, this indicates that there is room for growth in Amsterdam's hotel business.
Growth prospects
The Amsterdam hotel market is booming, with demand for hotel rooms expected to increase substantially in the foreseeable future. Amsterdam is rising to the challenge and thousands of new hotel rooms (ranging from one star to five) are currently in the planning stages, due to be complete by 2015.
Recent arrival
Several new hotels have opened their doors in Amsterdam recently. DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station (formerly the Mint Hotel) recently opened for business, situated on the river front, near Central Station. In its previous incarnation, it was British hotel chain City Inn's first hotel on continental Europe. It cost more than 100 million euros to build and was the largest British investment in the city for five years.
