According to recent data from the European Central Bank (ECB) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch insurance and pension sector is the third largest in the euro area.
The data published by the DNB (up till the end of March 2011) show that total assets from the Dutch pension and insurance sector were over 1,200 billion euros. That equates to 17% of the total assets from the euro area pension and insurance sector (7,025 billion euros).
Only in France and Germany is the pension and insurance sector larger than the Netherlands.
The Dutch pension sector is substantial with over 450 pension funds managing a total of 790 billion euros, ranking the sector first among the euro area nations. Most of the funds operate from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, making the region a hub of expertise for pan-European pension asset management.
