Vueling Airlines, one of the fastest growing low cost airlines in Europe, will open a base at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in April 2011. Alex Cruz, Vueling Board of Directors member, officially announced the news on 7 December 2010 to Jos Nijhuis, President and CEO of Schiphol Group and Erik van der Burg, Vice Mayor of the City of Amsterdam.
Vueling follows in the footsteps of airlines such as KLM, Transavia, Martinair, ArkeFly and Amsterdam Airlines in choosing a base at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
It is Vueling’s second base outside Spain. In early November, the company announced plans to open a base at Toulouse airport in 2011.
Phase one sees Vueling flying an Airbus A320 from Schiphol, adding 6,000 extra seats to flights headed to Spanish destinations. In April 2011, Vueling will add 28 additional flights and offer flights to other locations such as Zürich, Alicante and Palma de Mallorca. In the summer of 2011 Vueling will add Ibiza, Secilla and La Coruna to its regular flight destinations.
"We are honoured to have been selected by Vueling as its second base outside Spain, and by its decision to expand the number of flights from Schiphol. This is good news for employment at and around the airport. It will also help to enhance the network of destinations that can be reached from Schiphol - to the benefit of both holidaymakers and business travellers," says Jos Nijhuis.
Vueling's choice for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol reflects the importance of Schiphol as a gateway to Europe. From the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, the rest of the world is never far away. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is centrally located and only two hours flying time from all crucial business destinations in Europe. More than 90 airlines operate out of Schiphol, offering flights to 265 destinations around the world. Schiphol is the third largest European cargo airport and the fourth largest European airport in terms of passenger numbers.
Ales Cruz explains, "We launched flights to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in October 2005. Since then it has been growing in a steady but consolidated basis. The company has transported nearly two million passengers through Schiphol since then. The creation of this new international base shows, then, the commitment we have to the Netherlands. "
