PICNIC, Amsterdam’s leading annual international event highlighting creativity and innovation, particularly in media, entertainment and technology, announced the 2011 “Urban Futures” theme for this year's festival, which takes place from 14 to 16 September in Amsterdam.
Waag Society director and PICNIC co-founder Marleen Stikker stated in a press release, “We will explore the impact of global urbanisation on our cities, societies and our lives and the way creative and smart technologies can play a role."
"The challenges following from mega urban environments in areas like demographic shifts, (natural) resources, infrastructure and health and governance are getting more and more pressing. PICNIC brings creative thinkers, developers, designers and entrepreneurs together to collaborate on possible solutions."
The PICNIC congress is regarded as "a high-level plenary meeting of bright and creative minds" that brings media entrepreneurs, thinkers and creators together to share their stories with more than 1,000 delegates from all over the world. The fact that the city hosts such a grand event for the creative industry enhances Amsterdam’s reputation as a global creative hub.
This year’s sixth edition of the PICNIC festival promises to be a unique experience. PICNIC’s creative director, Marcel Kampman: “We are going to build an actual ‘PICNIC City’ to prototype creative, urban applications and concepts and we will call upon the PICNIC community to help us build this temporary environment.” The ‘PICNIC City’ will emerge at a new location for PICNIC ’11: the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam Noord. More information about the event can be found on the PICNIC website.
