Fashion designers, models, journalists and trendsetters from around the world flock to Amsterdam for the 16th edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week (AFW), running from 25-29 January 2012.
New, up-and-coming designers, and those already established in the international fashion world will show their latest collections in Amsterdam. Dutch designer Sjaak Hullekes will open this edition of AFW, housed primarily at the Westergasfabriek. Hullekes won the Mercedes-Benz Dutch Fashion Award in 2009 and is renowned for creating wearable clothing for the contemporary man. Amsterdam-born designer Tony Cohen, who typically shows his collections exclusively in New York, will break with tradition to also present at AFW.
A key aspect of AFW is that commerce and creativity sit side-by-side. In addition to the bustling fashion parades on the catwalks, a multitude of fashion events, business lectures, exhibitions, performances and parties will take place.
The third day of the festival is dedicated to showcasing upcoming designers. Tying into the festival’s business programme, the day will begin with a pitch meeting in which eight talented designers will present themselves to a group of investors, agents, buyers and other fashion professionals. This is followed by the ‘Fashion Fasterclass’, where partners such as ABN AMRO and Baker McKenzie will provide workshops for ambitious young designers.
