According to a report drawing on data provided by the AAA, the Amsterdam Innovation Motor, amsterdam inbusiness, SADC and Haven Amsterdam, the fashion industry in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area grew strongly during 2011.
During 2011, several renowned companies that were already active in the Amsterdam fashion industry expanded further within the Amsterdam Area. Key examples include G-Star – which expanded its European distribution centre at Amsterdam Haven – and Tommy Hilfiger. Other top fashion brands have also moved into the region, such as Karl Lagerfeld, which has opened a large office in the centre of Amsterdam. The full report can be read here (in Dutch).
The fact that the Amsterdam Area manages to attract more and more companies in the fashion industry can be explained by several factors. For example:
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the major airline hubs in the Netherlands, providing access to a wide range of international destinations. Among business travellers it is considered to be one of the best business airports in Europe and the world. In 2010, British business travellers voted Schiphol as number one in Europe.
Amsterdam’s global image is one of liberality, tolerance and free-spiritedness. Thus, the city exerts a lot of pull on creative people worldwide, making it relatively easy to attract top talents.
Due to its strategic location, the Amsterdam Area is also an important logistics hub for the distribution of fashion items. This combination of creative excellence and logistic superiority acts as a magnet to many companies involved in the fashion sector.
Work and quality of living in Amsterdam are equally important. The compact scale is what really distinguishes the city of Amsterdam from other fashion hubs, since this facilitates creativity and knowledge exchange. All relevant contacts are just a stone’s throw away, and this makes the total process of creation and production faster and more flexible.
