Amsterdam is 2010's highest ranked newcomer on the Top Fashion Capitals list, an annual survey by Global Language Monitor (GLM). New York has regained the title of World Fashion Capital for 2010, after being bested by Milan in 2009.
The Top Fashion Capitals List was expanded to forty from thirty to reflect the various emerging and diverse players affecting the industry.
Top newcomers to the expanded list included No.17 Amsterdam, No.23 Cape Town, No.25 Johannesburg, No.27 Vienna and No.32 Bali.
With its 17th position, Amsterdam surpasses other European cities like Berlin and Rome which experienced the steepest decline for the survey ever. Rome lost 18 places and now ranks 22nd on the list while Berlin ranks 18th.
The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is a fashion hub with more than a hundred fashion designers which also hosts the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. Due to its strategic location, the area is also an important hub for the distribution of fashion. The combination of creative excellence and logistic superiority acts as a magnet for many companies in fashion.
“The importance of the emerging regional fashion capitals demonstrate a major global re-alignment in the multi-trillion dollar global fashion industry," said Bekka Payack, the Manhattan-based fashion correspondent for the Global Language Monitor.
This ranking was based on GLM's predictive quantities index, a proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in print and electronic media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere. The words and phrases are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets.
