The Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, launched a mission to Xiamen, China on 27 March 2011. The Amsterdam delegation spent three days in China, making contact with numerous companies in the area.
The Dutch delegation boarded the inaugural KLM flight to Xiamen and departed from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
By adding the city of Xiamen to their network, KLM and its partners now offer direct flights from Schiphol to seven Chinese destinations including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. KLM offers 43 weekly scheduled flights from Amsterdam to locations in China.
China is very well connected to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area with the addition of Xiamen, not only logistically, but the economic relationship between the Amsterdam Area and China is also extremely strong.
In 2010, more than a third of all 122 international companies that set up shop in the Amsterdam Area had their roots in China. One of the companies that opened an office in the Amsterdam Area last year was ICBC, a large Chinese bank.
Close ties between Amsterdam and China date back to the 17th century. Today, the Amsterdam Area is home to a large community of Chinese expats, students, entrepreneurs and second and third generation immigrants. The cultural heart of the community lies in Amsterdam’s Chinatown. In the 20th century, a sister port agreement was put into place between the ports of Amsterdam, Tianjin and Xiamen.
