From 27 August to 3 September 2011, Amsterdam’s Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and alderwoman Carolien Gehrels will lead a delegation to China. One of the highlights in their busy schedule will be the opening of the Van Gogh and the Amsterdam Impressionists exhibition in Beijing’s Capital Museum.
Exhibiting the paintings in Beijing will be a historical moment and the perfect way to cross any cultural or language barriers.
“Alderwoman Carolien Gehrels already visited the Capital Museum in 2008 to discuss cooperation, and now Amsterdam is able to bring one of the most famous artists that the Netherlands has to offer, with thanks to the support of the Rijksmuseum, Philips, ING, KLM and Akzo Nobel,” said Mayor van der Laan .
The delegation will be strengthening the already close ties between the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) and China with a week packed full of activities. The AMA hopes to function as a bridge between China and Europe; an ambition that can be considered both idealistic and realistic. Currently 70 Chinese companies are established in the AMA – 30 of those arrived in recent years. Additionally, there is no other city in Europe with more direct connections to different Chinese cities than Amsterdam.
During the visit Mayor van der Laan and his delegation are looking to learn from China’s dynamic growth successes, while emphasizing that Amsterdam has a lot to offer in return.
