On 2 March 2011, Annemarie Jorritsma, the Mayor of Almere, officially opened the new World Trade Center Almere Area (WTCAA). On the same day, the city launched its English website.
The city of Almere sees the opening of the new WTCAA skyscraper as a sign that international business has increased in the city and will become a key factor in the future of the region. This is why the city has also chosen this moment to launch a dedicated English language version of its website, in order to better inform English-speaking expats living in Almere.
After the opening of the building, it was business as usual: on 8 and 9 March 2011, the WTCAA welcomed a delegation of Canadian business people from Nova Scotia. The purpose of the visit to Almere was to network and investigate the further potential of doing business in the area.
A part of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, Almere’s dynamism as a business location really stands out in the Netherlands. Building and development plans progress quickly, and several new office locations are still in development. Every day the city welcomes 20 new inhabitants, making it the fastest growing city in Europe.
Almere’s growth can also be perceived in the economy. Currently, 13,000 businesses are located in Almere and the city welcomes new firms regularly. Every year, the local chamber of commerce registers 1,100 new companies, while business sector growth is more than 10% per year.
Both national and international businesses are discovering the space available to entrepreneurs, both literally and figuratively. Leading brand names represented in the city include LG, Mitsubishi, IBM, Black Box Logistics, Stork Turbines Services and PON Caterpillar.
Almere is just 25 minutes away from Amsterdam and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, connected directly by road and rail links. Always looking to the future, the city is investigating further high-speed routes that could be deployed in the coming years.
