Starbucks has opened its first Amsterdam store in the Leidsestraat, a popular shopping and dining district in the city centre. The opening marks the start of a phased entry into high street locations in Amsterdam. A second, larger store will follow on the Beethovenstraat this summer.
Starbucks has operated in the Netherlands since 2002, when it opened its EMEA headquarters and coffee roasting facility in Amsterdam. It is the only Starbucks roasting facility located outside of the United States.
Starbucks' retail presence in the Netherlands dates back to 2007, when the first coffee house opened at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Currently, there are five outlets at Schiphol and another five at major railway stations in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden, operated by licensed partners HMS Host and Servex respectively. The new fully owned Starbucks on the Leidsestraat is the 11th in the Netherlands.
Carolien Gehrels, City of Amsterdam Alderperson for Economic Affairs, Arts and Culture, welcomed Starbucks to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and commented: “We welcome the first Starbucks store in the centre of Amsterdam. I’m sure Starbucks will feel at home in Amsterdam’s vibrant city centre and attract both locals and customers from all over the world.”
Rich Nelsen, president of Starbucks Coffee EMEA, said: “As we celebrate our company’s 40th anniversary we are excited to open our first store in the very heart of Amsterdam. We look forward to continuing to introduce our high-quality coffees and unique Starbucks Experience to customers in the Netherlands.
