Quality of living in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has reaffirmed its reputation as a city that offers a high quality of life for its inhabitants. In a recent survey on the quality of living in cities throughout the world, Amsterdam once again finished in the top 20.
European cities dominate poll
In 2011, Amsterdam ranks 12th on Mercer’s Quality of Living index, moving up one spot higher than its 2010 poll result. The key difference this year is that the scoring allows for city-to-city comparisons, resulting in a quality-of-living index that can reflect relative differences between any two locations. Among the rankings for the world’s top 10 cities, seven are European.
Satisfying citizens and visitors
Amsterdam continues to score highly compared to other European capitals, ranking above Brussels, Berlin, Paris and London. Previous research has also identified Amsterdam as a very liveable city, and it is therefore no surprise that many expats who initially move here for work then find it a difficult decision to leave.
Quality of life crucial for businesses
The strong result in the 2011 index is excellent news for Amsterdam and its surrounding areas. Previous polls have shown that quality of living plays an increasingly important role in helping businesses decide where to settle and expand. This latest study serves to remind international businesses that their employees can enjoy a high quality of life within the city.
