Amsterdam: one of Europe's least congested cities

Getting around in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is easy and efficient. Relatively few traffic jams congest traffic in and around the city. This conclusion is drawn from research in 59 European cities conducted by Tomtom.

Brussels most congested

Amsterdam: least congested city

Brussels tops Tomtom's list of cities with the most traffic jams. Car drivers in the Brussels area are confronted with delays of 37.7 percent on a daily basis. This makes the European capital the most congested city in Europe.

Driving in the United Kingdom can be an unpleasant, lengthy experience as well. London ranks 4th in the list of cities with the most delays for drivers on motorways. This in spite of the surtax that has to be paid by Britain's capital because of the queues. In total, four British cities are in the top ten of places where motorists experience the most delays.

Accessible Amsterdam

Amsterdam stands out as one of the cities where motorists can get around with few delays. Amsterdam ranks 15th on the list of most congested cities in Europe. Drivers will experience less delays than in other European capitals such as Paris, London, Luxemburg and Milan for example.

The results of the study by Tomtom highlight Amsterdam's position as a very accessible city. Getting around in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is both comfortable and can be done quickly. Not only by car.

Superior transportation

Thanks to the excellent transport services the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has in place, the rest of the world is never far away. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's top airports, is just 15 minutes from the city centre. That is as great for keeping in touch with family and friends as it is for work. Trains, sea and road connections are as equally reliable. By train, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris are within easy reach. For expats, Amsterdam is a great base to explore the whole of Europe.

Public transportation is excellent in the area as well. Amsterdam's train station for example is the largest public transportation hub in the Netherlands. From here approximately 300,000 passengers per day come and go by bus, tram, metro or train.
