On 25 January 2010, State Secretary Maria van Bijsterveld saw the first bricks being laid as the foundation of the new International School in the city of Almere. Its construction reflects Almere’s growing ambition to expand its reach to the international community.
The International School Almere is currently working out of Trinitas College on a temporary basis, teaching 80 students from 12 different countries.
Relocation to the new premises, situated at Cascade Park in Almere Poort, will take place later this year. The new building is modeled as a campus, allowing students to study in an international environment that’s both exclusive and sustainable.
The City of Almere hopes to attract more international companies to the area by providing a dynamic study, work and living environment to its multinational residents. The new school campus will be able to accommodate up to 300 students when finished, making it an important initiative of the city’s long term goals.
Almere is just 25 minutes from Amsterdam and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, making it one of the fastest growing cities in The Netherlands.
The city plans to grow by 60,000 homes, 100,000 jobs and 350,000 residents in the next 20 years, becoming a sustainable and vibrant city in which to live and work. “To sustain our growth, we hope to attract more multinational companies by providing them an ideal place to live and do business,” noted Alderman Visser of the city of Almere.
There are currently over 100 non-Dutch companies present in Almere. Given the increasing rate of newcomers to the city, plans for rapid growth are looking firmly on track.
