While other European cities took a fall on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) liveability ranking, Amsterdam remains in the top tier and ranks 26.
The EIU rated a total of 140 cities across the globe on their living conditions. Amsterdam’s position on the list is good, if you consider the slight depreciation in the euro due to the current economic crisis within the euro zone. Athens’ score fell 2.5% as a result of the government’s austerity measures and the protests that followed.
The most liveable cities worldwide can be found in Australia and Canada. According to the EIU, cities in these two countries dominate the top ten with Melbourne taking the number one position as the most liveable city in the world.
Only two European cities made it into the top 10: Vienna (2) and Helsinki (7), while London ranks a low 53 on the list.
In other influential ‘living conditions and quality of life’ rankings Amsterdam traditionally scores well. In the latest Mercer Quality of Living Index, Amsterdam ranked in the top 20 cities with the highest quality of life.
